Pre-Raid Checklist

Like all good leaders there’s a time to check in on the troops. It’s best to play Who’s Naughty / Who’s Nice before the raid begins. Inspecting during the raid is pretty vanilla b-game crap. We have a lot of tools to check on the status of our raider’s gear and other variables. So here’s a checklist for the essentials before your first pull.

Flasks & Feasts: Most established guilds provide these for their raiders via a cauldron but if you’re guild doesn’t have that unlocked or you’re a bunch of broke ass fools then your raiders will need to supply them. Don’t buy the “I don’t have the gold” line. It’s way too easy to make money in Azeroth. If they don’t have the gold for flasks / feasts / repairs, then they don’t have the gold to raid. Blizzard has really improved the farming -> raiding ratio since the BWL days. Don’t believe the slackers.

Gems/Enchants: I have a pretty well established team of 10 and I still do this every so often just to check in on the guys/gals. Go to t
he Armory - Search for the toon you’re auditing – Now click the “Advanced” link in the mid-to-upper right of the character screen – scroll down and see if the character has passed the audit in the lower right of the screen.
Here it will complain if they are missing profession perks like extra sockets, enchants, etc.If they have it means they are fully gemmed and enchanted on all their gear including profession-only bonuses. I’ve even caught myself missing the extra socket from BS on my new bracers before. It’s a bit of a tattle tail app but I like to think of it more as a reminder for busy people  Here as well, do not buy the line about using sub par enchants and the cost of the good ones. I will only hand out loot to people who have maxed their current gear. That seems to motivate the cheap skates pretty quick.

Talents/Glyphs: Here’s where life as a raid leader gets a little annoying but it’s worth your time if you like the noob you’ve brought to your raid but know he/she isn’t going to make the best independent choices. Go to http://www.elitistjerks.com -> Forums -> class forum -> See what people are rocking as the ideal talents/glyphs etc and make sure your bud is at least close or has reasons for the deviation from the commonly agreed upon best X. It’s not like it used to be that every single talent point needed to be perfect but theirs a base spec that most of the math nerds agree on. Start there and fool around with the other points.

Boss Video: Get used to updating the Guild Message of the Day with the raid time, boss being attempted, and a URL to the agreed upon video to watch. Having everyone on the same page pre-pull can save lots of time. Because GMOTD limits the number of characters displayed you will want to use a service like http://www.tinyurl.com to shorten the video URL to something usable like: http://tinyurl.com/GuildAlikir

More on Flasks: Each class will have a flask that is best for them. Some “BIS” flasks are actually the combination of two elixirs. Cauldrons take this babysitting headache away.

More on Food: Feasts typically satisfy the food requirement for each class although tanks will sometimes want to use a mastery enhancing food in its place.
